In 2010, Chris Gerrett received approval from the mayor to develop & lead a community program to restore the tombstones at the city-owned cemetery, Fairview Park Cemetery. In 2020, a new mayor, the same approval requested, the same approval received, and the community program, Adopt-A-Tombstone continues ….
Many community members have adopted tombstones throughout spring, summer, and fall (a.k.a. Cemetery Season), these community members and local organizations ARE the reason the program is a success. (Check out the menu option ‘Restoring a Landmark’ to see how they do it).
In addition to local community members volunteering, in 2021, there were several volunteers from Utah and a few from Arizona; how cool is that? Are you interested in learning more about the program, call 440-356-9454 or email FairviewParkCemetery@gmail.com.
How the program works ~ VERY SIMPLE
Donating your time to restore a tombstone is considered ‘adoption’. Adoption is a one-time adoption, in other words, you are not responsible for maintaining the tombstone.
Making a financial donation to help cover the cost of supplies is considered ‘adoption’ (100% of donations go towards supplies for restoration work)
Volunteering to restore a tombstone does NOT require a financial donation.
Offering to make a financial donation does NOT require you to perform restoration work. (But you can if you are interested)
Volunteered time can be small blocks of time, such as 3 different days donating 1 hr. of your time each day.
First step, call 440-356-9454 or email FairviewParkCemetery@gmail.com to have your name added on the schedule.
Days and time scheduled? Scheduling is flexible, there should be no problem meeting your availability.
Type of work performed by volunteers – you pick: Light duty – Extra Heavy Duty
When? Days and times are flexible, to meet your availability.
